Workshop Goal

The Problem

Improve communication quality, reduce misunderstandings, and build shared norms for how the team gives and receives information.

What You'll Achieve
  • Surface current communication patterns and friction points
  • Reveal assumptions about how information flows across the team
  • Explore communication style differences in a low-stakes format
  • Generate shared norms for giving and receiving feedback
  • Align on the most important communication changes to make

Workshop Timeline

A step-by-step structure for the full 60-minute session.

  1. Icebreaker Experience 10 min
Warm up. Create safety for honest communication conversation.
Open with: "We are not here to critique anyone. We are here to understand how we communicate as a team."
  2. Team Polls 12 min
Surface current communication patterns and where friction exists.
Pause on any result that surprises the room. Ask: "What does this tell us about how we share information?"
  3. Would You Rather 10 min
Explore communication style differences and preferences.
Communication WYR questions reveal real style differences. There are no wrong answers — only useful data.
  4. Idea Storm 12 min
Generate shared norms and practices for better team communication.
Keep ideas focused on team-level practices, not individual behaviour. Redirect personal critiques to: "What would help the whole team?"
  5. Priority Poker 12 min
Align on the most important communication changes to make.
After reveal: "This is what the team said matters most. What do we commit to changing?"

Facilitator Guide

Key Notes

  • Keep discussion focused on team-level patterns — not individual communication styles.
  • Avoid singling out specific people. Results are aggregate signals, not individual verdicts.
  • Polls are the diagnostic core. Pause on any result that surprises the room.
  • Idea Storm should produce practices the whole team can adopt — not feedback for one person.
  • Close with a concrete communication commitment, not a general aspiration.

Discussion Tips

  • What communication habit on this team creates the most friction?
  • Where do we assume information has been shared when it hasn't?
  • What would better communication look like on this team at its best?

Closing Prompts

  • "What's one communication norm you're committing to after today?"
  • "What's one thing you need from this team to communicate better?"
