Workshop Timeline

A step-by-step structure for the full 60-minute session.

  1. Icebreaker Experience 8 min
Normalize the management transition. Create safety to admit uncertainty.
New managers often feel like they should already know everything. Open with: "Nobody has this figured out on day one."
  2. Would You Rather 10 min
Explore common management dilemmas — delegation, feedback, managing former peers.
New manager WYR questions are designed around real first-90-days tensions. There are no right answers.
  3. Team Polls 10 min
Surface confidence levels and areas of uncertainty across the cohort.
Pause on any area where confidence is low. Name it: "This is worth spending time on."
  4. Priority Poker 12 min
Prioritize the most important early management practices.
Focus on first-90-days priorities: one-on-ones, delegation, feedback, expectations, managing former peers.
  5. Team Retrospective 12 min
Reflect on the management transition and close with practical commitments.
The retro closes the session. Ask: "What's one thing you're committing to in your first 30 days?"

Facilitator Guide

Key Notes

  • This is not a leadership development session for executives. Focus on first 90 days.
  • Topics: one-on-ones, delegation, feedback, role transition, managing former peers, setting expectations.
  • Open with: "Nobody has this figured out on day one." Normalize uncertainty.
  • Polls surface confidence gaps — name them explicitly.
  • Close with a concrete 30-day commitment, not a general aspiration.

Discussion Tips

  • What's the hardest part of the transition from individual contributor to manager?
  • What's one thing you wish someone had told you before you became a manager?
  • What does good management look like on this team?

Closing Prompts

  • "What's one management practice you're committing to in your first 30 days?"
  • "What's one thing you need from this group to succeed as a manager?"
